Ivy Tech announces 2013 INSPIRE series

inspire-logo_color_flat_RGB-hi-resBeginning March 2013, Ivy Tech Community College−Northeast will host the first event in its popular INSPIRE Academy series, a film screening and discussion with the director of “Beauty Beneath the Dirt.” The event aims to answer the question: What happens when you put a lawyer, an Ivy League grad and a city chick on the Appalachian Trail?

The community in encouraged to attend at 6:30 p.m. March 6 in the Coliseum Campus Auditorium at Ivy Tech Community College–Northeast (3800 North Anthony Blvd.)

“Beauty Beneath the Dirt” is a far cry from your typical outdoor adventure travelogue. Unlike other Appalachian Trail documentaries that focus on camp life and the natural environment, director Katherine Imp takes a raw and uninhibited look at what happens to the mind, body, and soul over the course of a 2178.3-mile journey.

“I’ve always had a fascination with nature’s ability to transform, ever since my days of working for Outward Bound,” Imp said. “And though none of us were looking to be ‘transformed,’ I knew that five months on the trail would change each of us in some way. And I wanted to capture that change on film.”

A Q&A with Katherine Imp will follow the screening. For more event details, visit beautybeneaththedirt.com.

“INSPIRE Academy is founded on the basic principal that a community college should be charged with improving the quality of life for everyone in the community in which it operates,” said Patrick McCormick, program chair of the College for Working Adults.

Each year, INSPIRE Academy targets members of the community including Ivy Tech faculty, staff and students, members of K-12 educational institutes and community members.

The program is designed to be a lasting legacy for the northeast Indiana community by providing an ongoing series of events, exhibits and opportunities to enrich and inspire participants. INSPIRE stands for Ivy Tech−Northeast Speakers, Performers, Intellectual exhibits and Recreational Experiences.
